The Providence-St. Mel cheerleaders helped inspire the Boys Basketball team in their drive to win the Region 2A crown.
The Providence-St. Mel Knights are Region 2A Boys Basketball Champs, defeating Timothy Christian 49-40.
In a rematch of last year’s finals when Timothy Christian knocked out Providence-St. Mel, the Knights turned the tables for this year’s title. Trailing 21-20 at the half, Providence-St. Mel dialed up their defense, holding Timothy Christian to 1 of 8 from the floor and forced nine turnovers with their smothering 3-2 zone.
Teadric Anderson fired up the offense with 14 points in the third quarter and Donald Morgan put the Knights ahead 34-27. Timothy Christian closed the gap to 38-34 with 2:22 left, but two free throws and a rebound basket put the Knights ahead to stay.
The final score was 49-40. Kameron Kimbrough scored 13 points and Tevin Harris had 8, with 16 rebounds. Providence-St. Mel is coached by Tim Ervin. The Knights have a season record of 19-9.
