Women – Preserve Your Health During
Breast Cancer Awareness Month – October 1 - 31
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among black women, and an estimated 30,700 new cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2016. Similar to the pattern among white women, breast cancer incidence rates among black women increased rapidly during the last few decades, largely due to increased detection by mammography screening. Breast cancer incidence rates are also higher among blacks than whites for women under age 45. The median age of diagnosis is 58 for black women, compared to 62 for white women.

Facts about Breast Cancer in the United States
• One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
• Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women.
• Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women.
• Each year it is estimated that over 252,710 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,500 will die.
• Although breast cancer in men is rare, an estimated 2,470 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 460 will die each year.
• On average, every 2 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer and 1 woman will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes.
• Over 3.3 million breast cancer survivors are alive in the United States today.
Now, what’s the good news about beating breast cancer? All women can help reduce their risk of breast cancer by avoiding weight gain and obesity (for postmenopausal breast cancer), engaging in regular physical activity, and minimizing alcohol intake. Women should consider the increased risk of breast cancer associated with combined estrogen and progestin hormone therapy use, when evaluating treatment options for symptoms of menopause. The very best way to beat breast cancer? Get screened and get annual mammograms!
In addition, recent research indicates that long-term, heavy smoking may also increase breast cancer risk, particularly among women who start smoking before their first pregnancy. The bottom line: Know your risk factors for breast cancer and take the necessary action to maintain breast health. It can save your life!

Another Young Person Dies in Austin – And We Have to Solve More Murder Cases

We have lost of another young man on the West Side of Chicago. Last Saturday, 15 year old Anton Shaw was shot and unfortunately died on the 1100 block of North Long Avenue. He was staying with his grandmother in Austin and was a freshman at Foreman College and Career Academy in Portage Park. The death of Anton has had a huge impact on our community, his friends, his school, and his family. There are still no apparent leads regarding who shot and killed Anton. The clearance rate of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) is so bad that people are literally getting away with murder in Chicago.
According to thecrimereport.org, Chicago’s homicide clearance rate – the percentage of cases in which police arrest or identify a suspect – fell from 17.1 in 2017 to 15.4 in the first six months of 2018. If that rate holds through year’s end, it would be the sixth consecutive annual decline. We must find trust in one another to help solve murders. Our police must have the technology, tools and personnel to solve cases. At the same time, we need reforms that produce stable working relationships between our police and the people they are sworn to protect. We need reforms that are good for the community as well as for the police serving on our streets.
We must be outraged enough to speak out and demand justice for Anton. I’m confident that 15th District Police Commander Ernest Cato III will put forth all necessary resources to catch the killer of Antonand bring them to justice. We need to work harder to shut off the flow of guns into our West Side and South Side communities.
We also must demand that anyone who has been affected by Anton’s untimely death be able to receive all of the support and counseling that they need to move through this very difficult time. We need to help Anton’s family and all families who are suffering from the trauma and ravages of gun and other forms of violence – we need responsive and sensitive counseling and mental health care that really works, just as this care is being provided in other emergency situations like school shootings in other parts of the country.
In the name of Anton Shaw, we must continue the fight for justice, transparency, accountability, counselling and mental health care, and more opportunities for people to be successful in vibrant communities all over the city, especially rebuilding the South and West Sides of Chicago. Together as one city – North, South, West and East – let’s show our love for Chicago and come together as brothers and sisters to heal and grow and rebuild one Chicago.

HE DATING GAME – HAVE YOU CAUGHT YOUR FOX?

These days, if we’re honest, dating can be quite a challenge to say the least. From weird dates to dates that just do not meet our expectations to dates that seem perfect only to go southward , the dating game can be quite complex. Whether we’ve made the mistake of giving our number too prematurely or plainly put, having sex with the wrong one with either hopes of a commitment or with little to no expectations, dating can really take a toll on the common American.
In the second chapter in the Song of Solomon and the fifteenth verse, the Shulammite woman says, “Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom.”
Foxes were and still are perceived as destructive animals that have the potential to utterly destroy a territory over a period of time. However, in this particular passage of scripture, the foxes that the Shulammite woman addresses with King Solomon are symbolic to problems that could occur and cause devastation to their growing romance (vineyard) prior to their wedding day. In essence, this Shulammite woman makes it known that though the romance between the two is alive and well, she wishes for their love to continue. However, their love cannot continue if the “little foxes” aren’t removed from their vineyard.
Often times, we ignore the seemingly “small” problems because our minds and hearts are set on what we would like and what we imagine. We ignore the disappearances, the lying, the presence of another person in the background, the anger, the passive aggression, the deception, the inability to commit and/or the unwillingness to communicate and have a heart to heart. We would much rather just float on “what could be.” Conversely, if these “small” problems are not addressed in dating in fear of losing someone, we inevitably are faced with much bigger problems down the road. In plainer terms, we are left to deal with a demolished vineyard and love will escape us.
So, what does God have to do with it? Earlier in the first paragraph, it was stated that dating can really take a toll on the common American. If we’re honest with ourselves, fornication is like breathing in and out. It’s natural and it is widely accepted to have casual sex in America. Regardless of what is verbalized in those heated moments of passion, sex has lost it’s sacredness and is merely looked at as another extracurricular activity. Let’s be clear though - I’m in no shape, form or fashion in a position to condemn these acts. However, the consequences of fornicating are becoming more and more severe with each passing day. From broken hearts, sexually transmitted diseases and no commitment, our growing desire to please the flesh outside of God’s Will is quickly sending us on a path of destruction. We become blind to our own actions and Satan will paint us a picture having us believe that all is well only to be taken aback at the great fall that will inevitably come because of our poor decisions. Additionally, when we don’t take the time to truly know someone because we’re pre-occupied with our own flesh and our own agenda and not God’s Will, we become blind to the “foxes” in our own lives. So what’s the point in all of this? Let us take a step back, assess the damage and see what foxes are running throughout our vineyards. Our land (life) is worth it. Get rid of the foxes.

October is National Awareness Month! - Awake, Aware, and Alert

To be aware is to be alive” is an old saying. It was a phrase designed by recovering addicts along with many other phrases that were internalized to promote self-help and mutual-help and the process of recovery.
An act of gratitude is a living whole. To superimpose on its organic flow a mental grid like a series of “steps” will always be somewhat arbitrary. And yet, for the sake of practice, such delineation can be helpful. In any process, we can distinguish a beginning, middle, and an end. We may use this basic three-step grid for the practice of gratitude: What happens at the start, in the middle, and at the end, when we experience gratitude? What fails to happen when we are not grateful? Before going to bed, I glance over the day and ask yourself: Did I stop and allow myself to be surprised? Or, did I trudge on in a daze?
To be awake, aware, and alert are the beginning, middle, and end of gratitude.

Step One: Wake Up
To begin with, we never start to be grateful unless we wake up. Wake up to what? To surprise? As long as nothing surprises us, we walk through life in a daze. We need to practice waking up to surprise. Surprise may provide a jolt, enough to wake us up and to stop taking everything for granted.

Step Two: Be Aware of Opportunities
There is a simple question that helps me to practice the second step of gratitude: “What’s my opportunity here?” You will find that most of the time, the opportunity that a given moment offers you is an opportunity to enjoy sounds, smells, tastes, texture, colors, and, with still deeper joy, friendliness, kindness, patience, faithfulness, honesty, and all those gifts that soften the soil of our heart like warm spring rain. The more we practice awareness of the countless opportunities to simply enjoy, the easier it becomes to recognize difficult or painful experiences as opportunities, as gifts.

Step Three: Respond Alertly
Once we are in practice for being awake to surprise and being aware of the opportunity at hand, we will spontaneously be alert in our response, especially when we are offered an opportunity to enjoy something.

Stop. Look. Go.
The Review Process helps to review my own practice of gratefulness by applying to these three basic steps the rule I learned as a girl for crossing an intersection: “Stop, look, go.” Before going to bed, I glance back over the day and ask myself: Did I stop and allow myself to be surprised? Or did I trudge on in a daze? Was I too busy to wake up to surprise? And once I stopped, did I look for the opportunity of that moment? Or did I allow the circumstances to distract me from the gift within the gift? (This tends to happen when the gift’s wrappings are not attractive.) And finally, was I alert enough to go after it, to avail myself fully of the opportunity offered to me?

Education Importance

When I was a young child, education importance was tantamount in me and my siblings lives. We were not allowed to have choices in learning, my parents did not debate whether we would go to school or not and we were not given any choice but to follow their instructions. However, today in our school systems, children think they know everything, spend their time with knowing the latest rap songs or music and would rather try to date the ladies then become educated. This my readers is an atrocity to this upcoming generation. Young men would rather sag their pants then stimulate their minds with learning. What will happen is they will become societies financial responsibility and we will have just another generation of ignorant less than students. It saddens me because the youth who do not want to learn are coupled with parents who are settling for their child being sub standard. Let’s start today with taking a stance where we are challenging our children to be better. Visit classrooms and demand more from students today. Teacher’s spend a great deal of time preparing only for children to not care about learning.

Boys Will Be Boys: What Message Are We Sending Our Youth?

In 2006, Tarana Burke created a network of available resources that were focused on helping survivors of sexual abuse find healing from their traumatic ordeal. In 2017, the movement went viral, when actress Alyssa Milano tweeted, “If all the women and men who have been sexually harassed, assaulted or abused wrote ‘me too’ as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem. #metoo.” Since then, the Me-Too Movement has rightly caused many men to rethink the way they approach, conversate with, and treat women in general. However, this sudden change in male behavior may not be caused by heightened awareness of the incidents alone; it may be caused by the fact that since April of 2017, approximately 250 celebrities, politicians, CEOs, athletes, and others have been accused of sexual misconduct.
It could very well be the growing public outcry, the calls for accountability, and in some cases the loss of status, employment, and income that have caused many men to become more aware of their personal actions. However, it seems like the overall consequences of being accused of sexual abuse are different depending on the individual’s ethnicity. In no way am I attempting to make an excuse for anyone’s adverse, destructive, or criminal behavior. Neither am I attempting to further complicate a difficult situation by adding an extra layer to the paradigm that is as adverse as it is controversial. Nevertheless, when Bill Cosby can be sentenced to 3 to 10 years in prison, while the judge in Harvey Weinstein’s case is considering a motion to dismiss his case, something is dreadfully wrong with the system. When Professor Christine Blasey Ford and her family are unable to return to their home because of death threats, while Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh sits on the bench and hears his first case, what message are we sending our youth?
During the Senate hearing, Minnesota State Senator Scott Newman tweeted: “Even if true, teenagers!” When I first read Senator Newman’s tweet, I was so shocked by it that I had to take a second to let it sink into my conscious mind. In so many words, it appears Senator Scott may have been saying that it really did not matter if Professor Ford was sexually assaulted because they were both teenagers when the incident occurred, and teenagers will be teenagers. As I thought about my teenage son and my daughter, I had to say it out loud to myself. EVEN IF TRUE, TEENAGERS!!! EVEN IF TRUE, TEENAGERS!!! EVEN IF TRUE, TEENAGERS!!! In all my years upon this oblate spheroid that we call Earth, I never thought that I would live to see the day that a serious criminal allegation is viewed as being nothing more than a youthful indiscretion. Especially by those who have the power to shape the lives of millions of people.
The idea that boys will be boys and the belief that young men must sow their wild oats have created an atmosphere of sexual domination at the cost of our daughters’ safety. To make matters worse, we tend to send our sons and daughters different messages. We tell our boys to go forth into the world and sexually conquer, but we tell our daughters to remain as pure as the driven snow until the right man takes your hand in marriage. My only question is, if we are encouraging our sons to conquer, while simultaneously telling our daughters to remain chaste, who are we expecting our sons to sexually experiment on? In the absence of a real male role model, many young men are told that a woman playing hard to get is part of the game. However, what must be taught is NO means NO, and forced sexual intercourse is RAPE. As I look back over my life, I remember my friends and me bragging about our sexual conquests. Although most of our stories were undoubtedly overexaggerated, and even close to being outright lies, we never stopped to think about the emotional pain and suffering that we left behind.
I have never raped anyone. I have never had drunken sex, and I have never knowingly asked anyone to have sex with me against their will. However, I have played the game, and I have said things to women that in retrospect I realize was offensive. As a school age child, under the guise of “catch a girl kiss a girl,” I have touched girls inappropriately, and I never gave any consideration to any objections. Sadly, I had to become a father before I could truly understand the damage that youthful indiscretions can cause. Although I cannot change the past, I have tried to positively impact the future by teaching my children that boys will not be boys, and adverse behaviors cannot be addressed with excuses. I have tried to teach my daughter and my sons that NO means NO, that sex is not a game, and that a woman’s body belongs to her. At all cost, we must be committed to training our children in the way that they should go: and when they are old, they will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6).

Greetings my dear brethren (everyone). God is Holy and so therefore we (His) special creations must be holy – for God is not mocked. Holiness must be maintained for only the Righteous shall be admitted in Heaven. It is the abode of those who are obedient to the Word of God. His commandments must be obeyed for obedience is better than sacrifice. Don’t risk your soul in hell; it is a place of total regrets, torture and pain for eternity (forever) and there is no pardon in hell. Get saved today while you are still alive (breathing) for tomorrow is not promised to no one. God is the only giver of life; the owner of your soul that must maintain holiness in accordance to God’s heavenly requirement.
Heavenly Father God had provided us (His Children) a way of escape from damnation of hell through His grace (unmerited favor); He ask that we acknowledge our sins before Him. Repent and change to be forgiven; commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in Him and He shall bring it to pass (Psalm 37:5). Whatever is troubling you. In sickness pray that Dr. Jesus, the Great Physician, touch you for by His stripes you are healed (1 Peter 2:24). When in need (lacking) in any daily substance (food, clothes, shelter, etc.) know assuredly that you are in the good hands of the Lord, God Almighty for He shall supply all our needs according to His riches in Glory by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19), fulfilling His Word. In fear of your safety and protection at any time, claim the power of the word of God, recite God’s remedy in Psalm 91:1-6.
Know of certain that whatever the problems in your life including your worries about Mr. Bill who may harass you even in the middle of the night when you are resting from the hard days job or you are just trying in the evening to fill an empty stomach with couple of peanut butter and jelly sandwich, washing it down with just a glass of cool aid while your daughter neighbor’s girlfriend during phone talk hinted they are having tasty dinner with wine just delivered to their house from a well known restaurant. You suddenly felt sad in jealousy of this family who already had 3 luxury brand new cars (Mercedes) packed on their driveway. Jesus invitation will ease your pain and anquish as you open your Bible with your right hand tumbling the passage – “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me for I am meek and lowly in hearts; and ye shall find rest unto your souls; for my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30.
Jesus said, “Behold I come quickly and my reward is with me to give everyone as the work of his or her hand shall be (Revelation 22:12,13). Refrain from all acts of wickedness, jealousy, envy & strife; receive abundant blessings and protection of God. Keep hope alive. Jesus is the way, the truth & the life. Sensitive Teeth
Is the taste of ice cream or a sip of hot coffee sometimes a painful experience for you? Does brushing or flossing make you wince occasionally? If so, you may have sensitive teeth.

Possible causes include:
• Tooth decay (cavities)
• Fractured teeth
• Worn fillings
• Gum disease
• Worn tooth enamel
• Exposed tooth root

In healthy teeth, a layer of enamel protects the crowns of your teeth—the part above the gum line. Under the gum line a layer called cementum protects the tooth root. Underneath both the enamel and the cementum is dentin.
Dentin is less dense than enamel and cementum and contains microscopic tubules (small hollow tubes or canals). When dentin loses its protective covering of enamel or cementum these tubules allow heat and cold or acidic or sticky foods to reach the nerves and cells inside the tooth. Dentin may also be exposed when gums recede. The result can be hypersensitivity.

Sensitive teeth can be treated. The type of treatment will depend on what is causing the sensitivity. Your dentist may suggest one of a variety of treatments:
• Desensitizing toothpaste. This contains compounds that help block transmission of sensation from the tooth surface to the nerve, and usually requires several applications before the sensitivity is reduced.
• Fluoride gel. An in-office technique which strengthens tooth enamel and reduces the transmission of sensations.
• A crown, inlay or bonding. These may be used to correct a flaw or decay that results in sensitivity.
• Surgical gum graft. If gum tissue has been lost from the root, this will protect the root and reduce sensitivity.
• Root canal. If sensitivity is severe and persistent and cannot be treated by other means, your dentist may recommend this treatment to eliminate the problem.

Proper oral hygiene is the key to preventing sensitive-tooth pain. Ask your dentist if you have any questions about your daily oral hygiene routine or concerns about tooth sensitivity.

Have you ever wondered why do I need a business plan? One may say to ones self “ I know what I want to sale. Can I just open my doors and start making money.” This is a thought that has crossed many entrepreneur minds, but having or not having a business plan can be the beginning or the end of ones business.
In early 2001, you all may know I published a hip-hop magazine that circulated in Chicago and two other major cities. The idea to start the magazine came over night. I can remember sitting on the floor in my brother’s room flipping through some old magazines. I looked him right in the eye and said, “ I want to start a hip-hop magazine.” Neither of us had writing experience and definitely no publishing experience, yet he was all in. Our entire business plan was fluttering in our imaginations.
Finally in 2003, after hundreds of hit or miss (only by the grace of God) we put out a full color glossy magazine. The hip-hop community loved the publication. We were on the media list of major music labels; we got passes to just about every hip-hop event. So what was wrong with that you ask? NO MONEY. We had zero revenue coming in, and no strategy in place to get any. We were the new guys on the block, and no ad agency would touch us. Also, big hip-hop publications where adding online versions of them selves, called e-zines, yet we still owed the printer. We hung on for a few years but closed shop in 2006.
In the end, we had a great product and tenacity, but no plan to execute anything. Today I plan everything, ever phone call, email, I even wrote a plan to write this column. “Remember no business has ever been totally successful with out a plan in place to make it successful.”

PCC Offers Care Centered Around You
Pregnant and struggling with addiction?

With growing heroin use on the west side of Chicago, PCC Community Wellness Center (PCC) has started a chemical dependency program that offers combined prenatal care and substance abuse treatment for pregnant women. In this program, the treatment of heroin, alcohol, and prescription drug abuse is offered right in the doctor’s office.
PCC’s goal is to meet patients where they are in their recovery and help them to set goals without judgment. PCC can help improve the patients’ health and the health of their babies. Patients in this program receive safe, medication-assisted treatment with buprenorphine and counseling. They visit weekly, are given ultrasounds, and deliver their babies at West Suburban Medical Center with a PCC doctor.
Services are available at our Chemical Dependency Clinic, located inside PCC Walk-In Wellness Center at West Suburban Medical Center at 1 Erie Court, Suite 1300, Oak Park, IL 60302. Pregnant women and their families in this program may continue to receive primary care, pediatric care, and behavioral health care at a nearby PCC location.
PCC accepts Medicaid, Medicare, and many health plans and also offers a sliding fee program for patients without insurance. They do not deny services because of inability to pay.

CANCER SOCIETY WARNS WOMEN OF THREAT FROM RADON EXPOSURE

A new report finds a statistically significant positive association between high levels of residential radon and the risk of hematologic (blood) cancer in women. This study is the first prospective population-based study of residential radon exposure and hematologic cancer risk, leading the authors to caution that it requires replication and whether it truly differs by sex.
Radon is a naturally-occurring byproduct of the decay of radium and is a known human lung carcinogen, the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Modeling studies show that radon delivers a non-negligible dose of alpha radiation to the bone marrow and therefore could be related to risk of hematologic cancers. More than 171,000 new cases of hematologic cancer and more than 58,000 deaths are expected in the United States in 2016. Hematologic cancers are the most expensive cancers to treat per quality-adjusted life year gained.
For the current study, researchers led by Lauren Teras, Ph.D., of the American Cancer Society used data from the American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Study-II Nutrition Cohort established in 1992, to examine the association between county-level residential radon exposure and risk of Hematologic cancer. The analysis included 140,652 participants among whom there were 3,019 hematologic cancers during 19 years of follow-up. They found women living in counties with the highest mean radon concentration had a statistically significant 63% higher risk of hematologic cancer compared to those living in counties with the lowest radon levels. They also found evidence of a dose-response relationship.
The authors say men may have a higher baseline risk, possibly because of more exposure to occupational or other risk factors for hematologic cancer, reducing the impact of any additional risk from residential radon. In women, who have a smaller baseline risk, residential radon exposure might be a larger contributor to overall risk. Another reason may be that the women of this generation spent more time in their homes, so had more residential exposure than men.
According to Dr. Teras, “Radon is already associated with lung cancer and if other studies confirm the link to blood cancers, we think it would warrant strengthened public health efforts to mitigate residential radon risks.”

ST. MALACHY + PRECIOUS BLOOD REQUESTS HELP FOR MOBILE PANTRY

Father Matthew Eyerman, Pastor of St. Malachy + Precious Blood Catholic Church, 2248 West Washington Boulevard, reminds everyone that his congregation hosts deliveries by the Greater Chicago Food Depository Mobile Pantry on the third Tuesday of each month. Volunteers unload the truck, bag the food, and distribute non-perishables, fruits, and vegetables to West Side residents. This food is available to anyone free of charge and without income verification. Each month, St. Malachy + Precious Blood serves more than 250 households representing well over 750 people, regardless of weather conditions.

In past years, the public has donated a pallet mover, tables, and bins. This year, Father Eyerman is requesting help in obtaining items to keep staff and clients dry and warm:

• $500 will install a retractable canopy

• $100 will purchase a pop-up canopy to keep food and volunteers dry

• $75 provides hand warmers for volunteers

• $50 provides single-use rain ponchos for clients & volunteers

MT. VERNON BAPTIST CHURCH OFFERING YOUNG ADULT RE-ENTRY PROGRAM FOR EAST GARFIELD AND NEAR WEST YOUTH

Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, 2622 West Jackson Boulevard, is providing assessment, support, and referral services as part of its Community Violence Prevention Program (CVPP) Re-Entry Program for East Garfield and Near West youth and young adults being released from Department of Correction facilities.

Any East Garfield Park and Near West juvenile between the ages of 13-28 currently on parole from any Department of Correction facility, or returning to CVPP communities from Department of Correction facilities are eligible to participate in the Mt.
