Honoring the 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act

The passage of the Fair Housing Act in 1968 was a huge step in the United States towards leveling the playing field for equal housing for Black Americans. But according to some, it now seems more symbolic than truly transformative. In retrospect, the passage of the Fair Housing Act arose from the ashes of urban despair and anguish, highlighting the massive social unrest observed by many of America’s community, political and business leaders following the tragic assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a man of peace, love and racial equality.
Although it’s been 50 years since its passage, research indicates African-Americans today still face comparable challenges as they did before Fair Housing legislation was enacted in 1968. While the economic recovery is still bypassing far too many Black Americans, for a variety of factors, including higher unemployment and under-employment, low and stagnant wages, non-existent or exhausted bank and credit union savings to name a few, there is some bright news: According to the National Assn. of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB), Black home ownership rose from its near 50-year low of 41.3 percent in the third quarter of 2016 to above 42 percent during 2017. While somewhat encouraging, the flip side is decidedly less so.
However, in 2018 African-American homeownership levels stubbornly remains nearly 30% lower than that of White Americans. Further, redlining, neighborhood disinvestment, displacement and other discriminatory lending practices still exist. Finally, despite concerted efforts aimed at expanding inclusive open housing opportunities - - potential Black homeowners still face considerable social, economic and racial resistance in many neighborhoods across the United States. Thankfully, many local and national housing agencies and groups continue to work towards increasing Black home ownership, encouraging more Black Americans to build wealth and financial sustainability through real estate. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are key players committed to this goal. Therefore, let’s remember to honor the 1968 Fair Housing Act, but realize there is obviously more work to be done to expand housing opportunities for all.

Economic Commission

In this week that we celebrate Independence Day, we must give freedom to our own American citizens. I wrote the following letter to Governor Rauner: On March 15, 2017, I passed House Resolution 42 requiring Governor Rauner to confront the economic problems that still plague African-American communities by creating an African American Economic Commission. The Commission would be composed of stakeholders from the communities where problems continue to devastate African American families.
I have written to Governor Rauner urging him to establish the Commission to confront the economic and societal challenges we are currently facing in African American communities. The goal would be to seek representatives from appropriate state agencies, ministers, business leaders, and all appropriate community stakeholders to explore, discuss, and coordinate efforts that can foster success in addressing the problems in these affected communities.
Economic and societal challenges for the Commission include: inequalities in access to justice in the civil court system; an overburdened and ineffective criminal justice system; overcrowding conditions in correctional facilities; increased homelessness; continued teen pregnancies; inadequate educational opportunities; a lack of affordable housing; insufficient delivery of social services to the less fortunate; and, deficiencies in the delivery of public health services.
The Commission can develop improvements to existing programs without allocating additional tax dollars by reallocating existing resources. Illinois could dramatically improve the delivery of services and also reduce wasteful spending of tax-payers money. The state government, taxpayers, members of the General Assembly, and the black community could all benefit from the creation of an action plan by this new Commission.

Iron!

I remember oh so well my mother teaching me how to iron. She took pride in all her sons ensuring that we could iron so we would not be dependent on anyone. What the iron does is make sure that the garment is free from wrinkles, looks crisp and allows the wearers to have a crisp look about themselves. The iron has a heating mechanism to cause the garment to be heated and pressed on the setting that is for the desired garment. Cotton cannot be ironed on the same heat setting as a silk garment. The iron must be controlled from its heat settings to successfully iron the garment. Our spiritual lives are like the iron and the garment. God gave His only begotten son so that we could have the right to the tree of life. Like the iron heats up and presses out all the wrinkles, the resurrection power of Jesus allows our sins to be washed in His precious blood allowing our sinful souls to be made clean. Since my mother taught me how to iron, I have never had to ask anyone to iron for me nor have I left looking wrinkled. Since I accepted Jesus as my personal savior, I have never regretted allowing Him to captain my life and free me from the wrinkles of sin!

Accessibility vs. Accommodations: Preventing Educational Discrimination in The Classroom

As an instructor, my main goal is to create a diverse educational environment whereby any student would find conducive for learning. This is a critical component within the ongoing process of teaching, and it is one that ensures equal access to the fundamental learning tools that are imperative in the steps to achieving educational success within any setting. Accordingly, the classroom is changing, and the way we approach the subject of teaching is changing as well. The world is becoming a much smaller place, and in any classroom across the country you may find students who speak English as a second language, students who may not speak English, students who are below grade level, and students who may be either diverse learners or developmentally challenged in some area. Furthermore, technological advancements are transforming the educational landscape, and the vanishing traditional classroom is evidence of this metamorphosis. Today a class may meet face-to-face, online, or may even be a hybrid of the two. Nevertheless, the challenge to provide equal access to each student remains the same. Therefore, instructors on every level must remain conscious of the court ordered mandates that govern the process of creating courses that are easily accessible for all students, while also making accommodations for those students who are in need.
As it relates to accessibility, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 states, “No otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the United States, as defined in section 706(8) of this title, shall, solely by reason of her or his disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” This Act ensures that not only students with disabilities, but all students will have an equal opportunity to receive an education. As it relates to accommodations, the Americans with Disabilities Act states, “Public schools must provide a free education, in an integrated setting where possible, to students with disabilities and make accommodations for their individual educational needs.” This ensures that students, who have shown a documented need for additional support, receive the extra assistance it takes to provide equal access to educational tools.
In the classroom, one way in which discrimination, which is the unfair treatment of a person or a group due to perceived differences (Merriam-Webster, 2018), occurs is when instructors either purposefully or unintentionally fail to provide the necessary accommodations or level of accessibility to all students. Providing an environment that is accessible for all students means creating an atmosphere of inclusiveness that counteracts any foreseeable hindrances to learning (University of Minnesota Disability Resource Center, 2018). Ensuring that accommodations are made for students, who are in need, means providing the opportunity for students with a disability to acquire the same information and engage in the same activities as their peers (Burgstahler, 2017).
While accessibility provides a blanket approach to counter classroom educational discrimination, accommodation requires individual adaptation to course material. Consequently, it is possible for an instructor to effectively provide either accessibility or accommodation within the classroom, and by negating to provide the other find him or herself out of compliance with the law. The best possible solution to this unfortunate situation is for instructors to create a classroom that embraces the idea of universal design, which according to the University of Washington is, “the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design” (2018). This takes foresight on behalf of the instructor and calls for him or her to be mindful of the way they prepare courses material. By considering the way educational tools are created, such as the fonts that are used for printing and PowerPoints, adding closed caption to videos, and providing exams and assessments that are not subjected to time restraints the instructor can provide a learning environment that invites success. Effective teaching is not just about the material that is being taught, it is about the environment that the teaching occurs in as well. In the thought provoking words of Albert Einstein, “I never teach my pupils, I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.”

Right around June 12, 2018, RED TABLE TALK, featuring Jada Pinkett Smith, her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris and daughter, Willow Smith, aired a show entitled, “Let’s Talk About Sex.” Accompanying this women’s round table discussion was Willow’s best friend, Telana Lynum.
In an age where sex reigns, hearing from undeniably gorgeous women who all seemingly have the most blemish-free, radiant, golden skin coupled with bodies that are void of hamburgers, pork chops and Lay’s potato chips, over 96, 000 people flocked to hear their opinions on sex. Pinkett Smith, 47, Banfield-Norris, 64 and Smith 17, touched on subjects under the category of sex that are seemingly not talked about openly. Nevertheless, these four women, Lynum included, ultimately discussed how women should enjoy sex. In all fairness, I didn’t have a problem with that. Even as a Christian woman, nothing is more satisfying than enjoying sex - with your husband. When a man is able to connect with your mind, stimulating you both intellectually and emotionally, to me, it only heightens just how great sex can be WITH your husband.
With intent and an identified purpose, Pinkett Smith expounds with both her own daughter and her mother on her experience with pleasing herself, her stint of abstinence, her attraction to a man with a perfectly elongated neck and her addiction with sex toys. From time to time, Banfield-Norris would show hints of amazement at her daughter’s candor, but for the most part, remained judge-free. Later on, in this segment, you’ll learn that Banfield-Norris has been married four times and recalled when one of her husbands asked her to go to counseling because she didn’t feel like having sex. Smith, at first hearing this news, expressed her shooting anger that her grandmother’s ex-husband suggested therapy.
As the segment continued to unfold, Pinkett-Smith informs her audience that her grandmother taught her how to sexually please herself at only nine years of age. Meanwhile, Banfield-Norris had a polar opposite experience while growing up remembering that “good girls don’t enjoy sex.”
Initially intrigued by such openness about a subject that isn’t always talked about openly from an educational point of view, the show’s information continued to replay over and over throughout the day. Were the things being expressed by these women at it’s core wrong? Not necessarily. Were their experiences real? Well, we’re certainly led to believe that they were. Were their experiences promoting God’s values and principles? Not by any stretch of the imagination.
So, what does God have to do with it? Not much. So much emphasis has been placed on sex and dating, if we aren’t careful, we are quickly consumed with bits of truth, being baited into always seeking pleasure, delight and fulfilling our most inner passions. My first disappointment was with the grandmother, Banfield-Norris. She’s the oldest and I expected more. However, having come from a maternal Jamaican upbringing, it became a bit more clear as to why she struggled so much. When religion takes precedence over human experiences, the results can be emotionally fatal even up to physical death. People who are void of human experiences and are muzzled with religion overload tend to make devastating mistakes when intense effective therapy is absent to sort through these life experiences. However, Pinkett Smith and husband Will Smith, are so bent into defying the “norms” and “going against the grain,” it is of no surprise when Willow comfortably uses profanity in front of both her mother and grandmother at 17 years of age without a hint of contrition.
Much like Beyonce, the Kardashians, Nicki Minaj and countless others, this family is also instrumental in tearing away at what God has instituted - sex within marriage with dignity. It does not matter how happy someone may look, it does not matter how free someone may appear to be, boundaries are put into place for a reason - our safety. In an age of information, where elites and intellects pride themselves in discovering the “truth,” chaos and havoc are bound to happen. Living a life of hedonism (which is in essence what this family is promoting) does have it’s consequences. Do not allow the media to tell you differently. You cannot expect to properly intake meat and bones simultaneously with a good outcome. Reference Psalms 73:17-19. Nevertheless, never be misled and never let it be misunderstood - you can still enjoy life and sex when you’re in God’s Will.

DO NOT FALL FROM DIVINE GRACE OF GOD

Tempting God is a sin. Temptation by the devil (Satan) is a trial. Clarity of the difference in both must be defined. Tempting God is refusal of God 10 commandments whereas temptation of man (human) by Satan is also a trial; hence both have in common “trial”. Better clarified is the Bible true story of the three Hebrew boys – Shadrack, Meshack and Abednego who because they refused to bow down to the graven image of King Nebuchadnezer were thrown into the fiery furnace, but they were not burnt – did not even smell smoke on their clothes for God was with them. But anyone who put his finger into the fire on purpose is tempting God. This is intentional sin and anyone who engages in adultery forbidden by God (Exodus 20:1-17) repeatedly as a habit is under the temptation of the monster (Satan) and if no repentance of this sin and change is sought, the grace of God soon runs out at death. The offender died suddenly and ended in hell of no return; no parole, regrets, torture and pain forever (Eternity)). Grace of God is not a passport to continue in sins.
Obedience is better than sacrifice. Do not risk your soul through spiritual ignorance; even the law of the land state - ignorance of the law is no excuse. To continue driving your vehicle thru a red light, ignoring the traffic light to stop is punishable by law – no wonder police in their car stop you; traffic ticket given you to appear in traffic court before the judge. No question, for you are guilty as charged. You face penalty of fines or imprisonment behind bars; a lesson to learn - LOOK, LISTEN, AND LEARN! Grace and repentance of sins compliment one another. Grace of God we all need; affording us more time for God tolerance allowing us time to wash our dirty laundry clean and not a passport to continue in repeated, endless sins. Repentance of sins by the same token is to make us feel sorry for our sins and to ask God for pardon. But when people lean more to Grace all the time and feel no remorse about their sins saying thus: grace for this, grace for that and this trend persists without being convicted of wrong doing to repent; the person rob himself or herself of God forgiveness of sins and if death suddenly knock at the door taking the breath away of the sinner, he or she ends in hell for Eternity (forever).
God is Holy, God is Love, but God is also Just; hence the Day of Judgment. Only the Righteous shall see God. Do not let sin reign in our body (Romans 6:12). Do not cause others to stumble (Romans 14:13). Do not grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30). Grow in Grace (2 Peter 3:18).

Removable Partial Dentures

Removable partial dentures usually consist of replacement teeth attached to pink or gum-colored plastic bases. Depending on your needs, your dentist will design a partial denture for you. A partial denture may have a metal framework and clasps that connect to your teeth, or they can have other connectors that are more natural looking. In some cases, a removable partial denture is made to attach to your natural teeth with devices called precision attachments. Precision attachments are generally more esthetic than clasps.
Crowns on your natural teeth are sometimes needed to improve the fit of a removable partial denture and they are usually required with attachments. Partial dentures with precision attachments generally cost more than those with clasps. Consult with your dentist to find out which type is right for you.
What to expect:
• In the beginning, your new partial denture may feel awkward or bulky. This is normal, and you will eventually become accustomed to wearing it.
• Inserting and removing the partial denture will require some practice.
• Follow all instructions given by your dentist. Your denture should fit into place with relative ease. Never force the partial denture into position by biting down. This could bend or break the clasps.
• Your dentist will give you specific instruction about how long the denture should be worn and when it should be removed.
• Initially, you may be asked to wear your partial denture all the time. Although this may be uncomfortable at first, it’s the quickest way to identify areas that may need adjustment.
• If the denture puts too much pressure on a particular area, that spot will become sore. Your dentist will adjust the partial denture to fit more comfortably. After making adjustments, your dentist will probably recommend that you take the partial denture out of your mouth before going to bed and replace it in the morning.
• Eating should become a more pleasant experience with dentures. Start out by eating soft foods that are cut into small pieces. Chew on both sides of the mouth to keep even pressure on both sides. Avoid foods that are extremely sticky or hard. You may want to avoid chewing gum during the adjustment period.
• Partial denture can also help improve your speech. If you find it difficult to pronounce certain words, practice reading out loud. Repeat the words that give you trouble. With time, you will become accustomed to speaking properly with your partial denture.
Caring for your dentures
• Your dentist can recommend a denture cleaner. Look for denture cleansers with the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance.
• When cleaning a partial denture, it’s a good idea to stand over a folded towel or a sink of water just in case you accidentally drop the denture.
• Do not use toothpaste since it can be too harsh for cleaning dentures.
• Some people use hand soap or mild dishwashing liquid to clean their dentures, which are both acceptable. However, most household cleaners are too abrasive and should not be used for cleaning dentures.
• Brush the denture each day to remove food deposits and plaque. The helps the denture from becoming permanently stained.
• It’s best to use a brush that is designed for cleaning dentures because it has bristles that are arranged to fit the shape of the denture. A regular, soft-bristled toothbrush is also acceptable.
• Avoid using a brush with hard bristles, which can damage the denture.
• Clean your dentures by thoroughly rinsing off loose food particles. Moisten the brush and apply the denture cleaner. Brush all denture surfaces gently to avoid damaging the plastic or bending the attachments.
• A denture could lose its proper shape if it is not kept moist. At night, the denture should be placed in soaking solution or water. Your dentist can recommend the proper method for keeping your dentures in good shape.
• Don’t chew, swallow, or gargle with denture cleansers.
• Always thoroughly rinse the denture before placing it in your mouth.
Adjustments
Over time, adjusting the denture may be necessary. As you age, your mouth naturally changes, which can affect the fit of the denture. Your bone and gum ridges can recede or shrink, resulting in a poorly fitting denture.
Dentures that do not fit properly should be adjusted by your dentist. Poorly fitting dentures can cause various problems, including sores or infections. See your dentist promptly if your denture becomes loose, and maintain your regular visits, too.

Remember: You can do serious harm to your denture and to your health by trying to adjust or repair your denture. Using a do-it-yourself kit can damage the appliance beyond repair. Glues sold over-the-counter often contain harmful chemicals and should not be used on a denture. If your denture breaks, cracks or chips, or if one of the teeth becomes loose, call your dentist immediately. In many cases, dentists can make necessary adjustments or repairs, often on the same day. Complicated repairs may require that the denture be sent to a special dental laboratory.

Have you ever wondered why do I need a business plan? One may say to ones self “ I know what I want to sale. Can I just open my doors and start making money.” This is a thought that has crossed many entrepreneur minds, but having or not having a business plan can be the beginning or the end of ones business.
In early 2001, you all may know I published a hip-hop magazine that circulated in Chicago and two other major cities. The idea to start the magazine came over night. I can remember sitting on the floor in my brother’s room flipping through some old magazines. I looked him right in the eye and said, “ I want to start a hip-hop magazine.” Neither of us had writing experience and definitely no publishing experience, yet he was all in. Our entire business plan was fluttering in our imaginations.
Finally in 2003, after hundreds of hit or miss (only by the grace of God) we put out a full color glossy magazine. The hip-hop community loved the publication. We were on the media list of major music labels; we got passes to just about every hip-hop event. So what was wrong with that you ask? NO MONEY. We had zero revenue coming in, and no strategy in place to get any. We were the new guys on the block, and no ad agency would touch us. Also, big hip-hop publications where adding online versions of them selves, called e-zines, yet we still owed the printer. We hung on for a few years but closed shop in 2006.
In the end, we had a great product and tenacity, but no plan to execute anything. Today I plan everything, ever phone call, email, I even wrote a plan to write this column. “Remember no business has ever been totally successful with out a plan in place to make it successful.”

PCC Offers Care Centered Around You
Pregnant and struggling with addiction?

With growing heroin use on the west side of Chicago, PCC Community Wellness Center (PCC) has started a chemical dependency program that offers combined prenatal care and substance abuse treatment for pregnant women. In this program, the treatment of heroin, alcohol, and prescription drug abuse is offered right in the doctor’s office.
PCC’s goal is to meet patients where they are in their recovery and help them to set goals without judgment. PCC can help improve the patients’ health and the health of their babies. Patients in this program receive safe, medication-assisted treatment with buprenorphine and counseling. They visit weekly, are given ultrasounds, and deliver their babies at West Suburban Medical Center with a PCC doctor.
Services are available at our Chemical Dependency Clinic, located inside PCC Walk-In Wellness Center at West Suburban Medical Center at 1 Erie Court, Suite 1300, Oak Park, IL 60302. Pregnant women and their families in this program may continue to receive primary care, pediatric care, and behavioral health care at a nearby PCC location.
PCC accepts Medicaid, Medicare, and many health plans and also offers a sliding fee program for patients without insurance. They do not deny services because of inability to pay.

CANCER SOCIETY WARNS WOMEN OF THREAT FROM RADON EXPOSURE

A new report finds a statistically significant positive association between high levels of residential radon and the risk of hematologic (blood) cancer in women. This study is the first prospective population-based study of residential radon exposure and hematologic cancer risk, leading the authors to caution that it requires replication and whether it truly differs by sex.
Radon is a naturally-occurring byproduct of the decay of radium and is a known human lung carcinogen, the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Modeling studies show that radon delivers a non-negligible dose of alpha radiation to the bone marrow and therefore could be related to risk of hematologic cancers. More than 171,000 new cases of hematologic cancer and more than 58,000 deaths are expected in the United States in 2016. Hematologic cancers are the most expensive cancers to treat per quality-adjusted life year gained.
For the current study, researchers led by Lauren Teras, Ph.D., of the American Cancer Society used data from the American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Study-II Nutrition Cohort established in 1992, to examine the association between county-level residential radon exposure and risk of Hematologic cancer. The analysis included 140,652 participants among whom there were 3,019 hematologic cancers during 19 years of follow-up. They found women living in counties with the highest mean radon concentration had a statistically significant 63% higher risk of hematologic cancer compared to those living in counties with the lowest radon levels. They also found evidence of a dose-response relationship.
The authors say men may have a higher baseline risk, possibly because of more exposure to occupational or other risk factors for hematologic cancer, reducing the impact of any additional risk from residential radon. In women, who have a smaller baseline risk, residential radon exposure might be a larger contributor to overall risk. Another reason may be that the women of this generation spent more time in their homes, so had more residential exposure than men.
According to Dr. Teras, “Radon is already associated with lung cancer and if other studies confirm the link to blood cancers, we think it would warrant strengthened public health efforts to mitigate residential radon risks.”

Father Matthew Eyerman, Pastor of St. Malachy + Precious Blood Catholic Church, 2248 West Washington Boulevard, reminds everyone that his congregation hosts deliveries by the Greater Chicago Food Depository Mobile Pantry on the third Tuesday of each month. Volunteers unload the truck, bag the food, and distribute non-perishables, fruits, and vegetables to West Side residents. This food is available to anyone free of charge and without income verification. Each month, St. Malachy + Precious Blood serves more than 250 households representing well over 750 people, regardless of weather conditions.

In past years, the public has donated a pallet mover, tables, and bins. This year, Father Eyerman is requesting help in obtaining items to keep staff and clients dry and warm:

• $500 will install a retractable canopy

• $100 will purchase a pop-up canopy to keep food and volunteers dry

• $75 provides hand warmers for volunteers

• $50 provides single-use rain ponchos for clients & volunteers

MT. VERNON BAPTIST CHURCH OFFERING YOUNG ADULT RE-ENTRY PROGRAM FOR EAST GARFIELD AND NEAR WEST YOUTH

Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, 2622 West Jackson Boulevard, is providing assessment, support, and referral services as part of its Community Violence Prevention Program (CVPP) Re-Entry Program for East Garfield and Near West youth and young adults being released from Department of Correction facilities.

Any East Garfield Park and Near West juvenile between the ages of 13-28 currently on parole from any Department of Correction facility, or returning to CVPP communities from Department of Correction facilities are eligible to participate in the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church CVPP Re-entry Program. Interested persons should call Denise Harris at 773/826-3295.
