OSCAR DE PRIEST SCHOOL PROVIDING FITNESS FUN ON WHEELS

Mary Holmes knows the challenges of getting kids off the couch, away from the video games, and keeping them active. She is the Physical Education Teacher at Oscar DePriest Elementary School, 39 South Parkside Avenue. She decided to put all of her students on wheels and they’re having a great time staying fit.
DePriest has a deal with Skate Time to provide roller skates at a charge of $7.00 per student. All of the school’s 550 students take part and no one wants to be left out.
Ms Holmes says roller-skating develops balance and coordination, as well as muscle tone.  It is good exercise that everyone can participate in. She says her autistic and visually-impaired students are among her best skaters, plus it is an activity that both boys and girls can participate in equally.
