In these tough economic times, people need all the help they can get. With this in mind, The Prevention Partnership, Inc., in conjunction with CEDA, West Side elected officials, The Learning Network Center, THE VOICE Newspapers, and other organizations presented a free Economic Stability Seminar at Frederick Douglass Academy High School.
The day-long session for 50 fathers provided career guidance and development counseling, plus direction on seeking rewarding jobs. Pathfinders Prevention Education Fund, a leading West Side agency promoting awareness of the risks for contracting HIV, AIDS, and sexually-transmitted diseases, held a party celebrating the birthday of its founder and CEO, Brenetta Howell Barrett. The gala merged socializing with raising funds for Pathfinders’ programs. Certificates of appreciation were presented to volunteers and supporters of Pathfinders, including Malcolm X College President Ghingo Brooks and Jeanne Keller. Board members Luster Jackson and Joyce Wade were saluted for their work on behalf of the organization.
Last summer, Pathfinders held an educational and leadership development program for teenagers. It was entitled Reading/Righting/Rhetoric and it developed young people’s understanding of current issues in the news, encouraging them to express themselves through writing and public speaking.
Jalisa Nelson, 13 years old, participated in the summer program and attended the celebration, reciting an original poem she wrote about AIDS.
For information on educational and counseling programs available through Pathfinders for youth, adults, and seniors, call Brenetta Howell Barrett at 773/533-5755.
