BRENETTA HOWELL BARRETT NAMED CHICAGO FREEDOM SISTER BY DUSABLE MUSEUM

Brenetta Howell Barrett, a luminary in the civil rights movement, political activist, state and city office- holder, newspaper reporter, minority business developer, and currently CEO of Pathfinders Prevention Education Fund, is included in an interactive exhibit at the DuSable Museum entitled, Chicago Freedom Sisters, paying tribute to outstanding Chicago Black women who have battled the status quo and advanced the cause of African American rights and empowerment. The exhibit is cosponsored by The Ford Motor Company and Macy’s. It runs through April 4. Ten women are honored as Chicago Freedom Sisters.

CHICAGO COMMITTEE TO DEFEND THE BILL OF RIGHTS HONORING ATTORNEY LAWRENCE E. KENNON

    Noted Chicago attorney, leader in the civil rights movement, and also for African American political empowerment, Lawrence E. Kennon is being honored for his lifetime of achievement by the Chicago Committee To Defend The Bill Of Rights at a celebration on Saturday, March 27, 3:00-6:00 PM, at 1401 West Roosevelt Road. The event is open to the public and will launch the Lawrence E. Kennon Scholarship Fund.
    Tickets for this event are $50 per person and $75 per couple. Reservations can be made by calling Brenetta Howell Barrett at 312/733-9692 or Bob Clarke at 773/281-5164. Checks made out to the Bill Of Rights Foundation are tax deductible.
    WVON Radio host Cliff Kelley is MC for the celebration and attorney James Montgomery is a principal speaker. MacArthur’s Restaurant is catering the celebration.
    Larry Kennon recently marked his 80th birthday and announced his retirement from the practice of law. He was a member of the law firm of Power & Dixon. He began his career as an assistant state’s attorney and practiced criminal law. He went on to represent the NAACP, ACLU, Black Panthers, and African American Patrolman’s League as he specialized in civil rights cases. Kennon has battled police brutality and is a participating attorney in the effort to prosecute Jon Burge and other police officers involved in torturing citizens.
    Kennon was a leader in the effort to elect Harold Washington Mayor of Chicago. He served as Chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals. He was one of Washington’s personal attorneys and served as Vice President of the Cook County Bar Association. He was involved in several landmark national legal battles and is recipient of prestigious honors and awards.

READING SPECIALIST DR. EDYTH E. YOUNG EXPOSES SECRETS TO LEARNING AT KARNAK INSTITUTE

Edyth E. Young, Ph.D., boasts that she can teach anyone to read and read well. She has the record to back up her claims. Dr. Young is a certified reading diagnostician, curriculum developer, professional development coach, education evaluator, and learning researcher. She concentrates on helping young people written off as unteachable to learn to read with proficiency and succeed in school. She conducts her own private practice summer diagnostic reading clinic for children and adults.
    On March 13, Dr. Young spoke at the Malcolm X College Karnak Wellness Institute and exposed the secrets of activating the Occipital Lobe of the human brain, thus unlocking the power of learning.
    Dr. Young explained how the brain reads words, discussed the six syllable types and how mastering them will build anyone into a powerful reader. She then moved from reading words to comprehending their meanings and gave simple hints for decoding definitions, such as context clues.
    Simply put, Dr. Young says everyone can read, read well, and learn.

COMMUNITY CELEBRATES AS ALD. MITTS OPENS NEW ALDI STORE

Alderman Emma Mitts declares, “Business is booming in Chicago’s 37th ward,” as she prepares to cut the ribbon, officially opening the newest Aldi store at 1440 North Kostner Avenue. The store design is the latest prototype for the discount grocery chain, featuring bright lights, colorful signage, wide aisles, and convenient, accessible product displays.
    Community leaders, clergy, and performers from Brian Piccolo, West Park, and Alfred Nobel Schools provided a festive flair to the Grand Opening ceremonies.
    Aldi is merely the latest in a strong line of new retail establishments Alderman Mitts has attracted to Chicago’s West Side, bringing more that 900 jobs and generating substantial sales tax revenues for the City. Her other retail recruitments include Wal-Mart, Menard’s, Food 4 Less, A.J. Wright, and Skechers.

Ms Buchanan will detail the benefits of holistic health practices, including yoga & meditation, for youth and adults, plus how to involve it in everyday life.

TOPIC: Managing Anger
Dr. Ingram will share best practices for managing anger in constructive and psychologically healthy ways.
SATURDAY, APRIL 17, 3:00 PM: Hunter H. Adams
TOPIC: Ma’at, The Science of Happiness Dating back thousands of years, the philosophy of Ma’at was the rule of order in ancient Africa. It was known as the prototype of natural law. Mr. Adams’ lecture and workshop is designed to teach how to control one’s consciousness for the purposes of character education, positive ethics, and enhancing potential.

All Karnak lectures are free of charge and presented in the Malcolm X College Cultural Center, 1900 West Van Buren Street. Free parking is available. The public is urged to attend the presentations in this series.

CONCERN CITIZENS WHO CARE HELPING YOUNG WEST SIDERS APPLY FOR SUMMER JOBS

Concern Citizens Who Care are opening their office at 5902 West North Avenue during Spring Vacation to assist young people ages 14-24 to apply for summer jobs through Mayor Daley’s Youth Ready Chicago. Help in filing on-line applications is being provided April 5-8 from 10:00 AM to 12 Noon daily.
    The jobs include all City and Chicago Park District positions, plus employment in the private sector, paid internships, and apprenticeships.
    Applicants under 18 need to bring a parent or guardian to give permission and all applicants need to provide their Social Security number and present their student ID, if they are attending school.
    There is no charge for assistance provided in applying for Youth Ready Chicago jobs.

GARFIELD PARK/HOMAN SQUARE LITTLE LEAGE FORMING

Registration is open for the Garfield Park/Homan Square Little League Baseball 2010 season. Boys and girls ages 5-16 are eligible to play. Opening Day is Saturday, May 1. STONE TEMPLE HOSTING WOMEN’S CONFERENCE MARCH 26 & 27

Stone Temple Church, 3622 West Douglas Boulevard, is presenting its 2010 Women’s Conference, entitled Women of Divine Perfection. Bishop and Pastor Derrick and Rishorna Fitzpatrick are hosting the event.
    The conference opens on Friday, March 26, at 7:00 PM, with a Worship Explosion. On Saturday, March 27, the day’s events begin at 9:00 AM with a continental breakfast, a session of praise and worship, and breakout sessions throughout the day.
