ST. ANGELA STUDENTS & STAFF WELCOME BIG SHOULDERS & CATHOLIC SCHOOLS REPS
Recently, representatives of the Chicago Catholic Schools administration and Big Shoulders Fund visited St. Angela School, 1332 North Massasoit Avenue, for their annual inspection tour of the elementary school that is being called the miracle of the West Side because it avoided closure when its sponsoring parish closed and has increased enrollment from just over 100 students to nearly 500.
St. Angela is renowned for outstanding student performance leading to being admitted to the most prestigious Catholic, private, and public high schools in Chicagoland. They also have a stellar record of winning essay and art competitions and being offered opportunities to participate in highly selective college-sponsored special academic programs.
Big Shoulders Fund was created by Cardinal Joseph Bernardin as a mechanism for assuring necessary financial assistance to students from low-income families to attend Catholic schools. Most St. Angela students receive scholarship assistance from the Big Shoulders Fund.
St. Angela School offers classes for boys and girls in Pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. For information on curriculum, admission requirements, extracurricular activities, and financial aid, call 773/626-2655. Geralyn Lawler is Principal of St. Angela School.

Chef Smith says he enjoys coming out to schools and talking about food preparation with students. “It gives me the opportunity to hear what they like and don’t like about the food we serve. Often, I get ideas from students that we can incorporate into the menus,” Smith observes.
Kristie Atkinson and Robin Garcia explain that it doesn’t help to serve nutritious meals if the children aren’t eating them. “They are our clients,” Atkinson declares, “the same as if the school was a hotel or cruise ship. We want the students to be happy and satisfied with the product we provide.”
Garcia adds, “That is why we are particular about the décor and cleanliness of the lunchroom and the way in which the food is served. We want the students to have a pleasant dining experience.”
Chef Smith spoke with several girls about nutrition issues and with Brunson kindergarten students about their favorite foods. He also toured the kitchen, observed food preparation, and spoke with staff about their concerns.
