U.S. REP. DANNY K. DAVIS PRESENTS 32nd ANNUAL HIGH SCHOOL ART COMPETITION



A total of 47 talented young artists entered their works in the 32nd Annual 7th Congressional District High School Art Competition. Winners were introduced and their artwork displayed at an awards breakfast in the United Center. Artists represented ten schools and training programs: Whitney M. Young High School, Hugh Manley High School, The Latin School of Chicago, Oak Park-River Forest High School, Proviso West High School, Proviso East High School, Michele Clark High School, Providence-St. Mel High School, Gallery 37 Center of Chicago, and Marwen Art School.
The competition was coordinated for Congressman Davis by Ben Montgomery and Dr. Louverta Hurt. Sponsors include: the United Center, Southwest Airlines, Covenant Bank, State Farm Insurance, Harris Bank, Christi with an Eye, Chicago Blackhawks, Chicago Bulls, Chicago White Sox, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, and Chicago Zoological Society. A Message to 2011 Graduates Let’s Make This a Year of Promise & Possibilities

As the commencement season nears, I offer my heartiest congratulations to all prospective elementary, high school, college and post-secondary graduates of the 37th Ward and throughout Chicago! I am a tireless advocate for quality education, and assisting hard-working students and their families navigate their way to a positive future. Each of you is to be commended on your magnificent achievement. The entire community is proud of you.
    The future is yours, and this year can be full of ‘The Positive Power of Promise and unlimited Possibilities’.  As you move forward in life - -remember one important thing: it will be up to YOU to affirm the “I CAN” Spirit to make your dreams come true. My advice? Believe in yourself, follow what you love, and be willing to ask for help. There are good people from all walks of life looking to help you succeed.
    Today, although you are graduating in the middle of a tough economy and an era of uncertainty, do not let anything keep you from achieving your goals!    It won’t be easy, but the most committed will emerge victorious.  What can you do? Seek out a mentor, look for scholarships and grants and work hard. Most important – never give up. As an intelligent, young, and talented individual, you are the STAR and the ARCHITECT of your FUTURE! Make it a BRIGHT one!! HAPPY 2011 GRADUATION TO ALL!

3 ARRESTED IN WEST SIDE ARMED ROBBERY

Christopher Jackson, 17 of the 4300 block of Gladys and Akeem J. Manago, 18, of the 1200 block of W. 14th St., were arrested & charged in connection with an armed robbery in the 1300 block of W. Roosevelt Rd. on June 5. A 15-year-old male juvenile was also arrested and charged.
Chicago Police arrested three suspects in connection with an incident at 1:05 AM, June 5, on the 1300 block of West Roosevelt Road. The offenders were located and identified with the assistance of video footage provided by the CTA. The incident is part of an ongoing investigation.
    Akeem J. Manago, 18, of the 1200 block of West 14th Street, was arrested and charged with one count of felony Aggravated Battery-Public Place, one count of felony Robbery-Armed/Other Dangerous Weapon, one count of felony Unlawful Use of a Weapon-Aggravated Veh. Or Concealed, and misdemeanor counts of Firearm without valid FOID and Possession of Ammunition without valid FOID.
    Christopher Jackson, 17, of the 4300 block of West Gladys Street, was arrested and charged with one count of felony Aggravated Battery-Public Place, and one felony count of Robbery-Armed/Other Dangerous Weapon.
    A 15-year-old male juvenile was arrested and charged with a felony Robbery-Armed/Other Dangerous Weapon and one count of felony Aggravated Battery-Public Place.

ST. PAUL LUTHERAN SCHOOL HOSTS MOTHER/SON & FATHER/DAUGHTER GALA TO END SCHOOL YEAR



Parents taught children the classic dance steps and kids schooled their parents on some new moves as St. Paul Lutheran School, 846 North Menard Avenue, brought families together for an unusual festive social event. About 100 people attended the big dance. Where fathers or mothers were unavailable, uncles, aunts, and grandparents filled in.

NEIGHBORS & FAMILY RENAME RICE STREET IN HONOR OF COMMUNITY ACTIVIST RUBY LEE



Ruby Lee was the heart of her Austin neighborhood along Rice Street west of Mayfield Avenue. She was the glue that held together her community and her family. She headed the block club for many years and galvanized local residents to maintain high standards for the neighborhood.
On June 4, Ruby Lee’s family and friends came out on the street she loved so much to unveil an honorary street sign in her honor and to fondly remember their matriarch and village elder.

PICCOLO SCHOOL COMBINES FITNESS & FELLOWSHIP AT FAMILY FUN DAY

VANCE E. BAINES CHARGED IN FATAL HIT & RUN ACCIDENT

Vance E. Baines, 38, of the 5400 block of Washington Boulevard, was arrested and charged with one felony count of IVC-Leave Scene of Accident-Injury/Death, in connection with a fatal hit & run traffic accident April 11 at approximately 8:05 PM, in the 3400 block of North Avenue, in which a 74-year-old man was struck and killed.

AIR FORCE RESERVE AIRMAN MICHAEL K. WILLIS, son of Michael Willis of West Lexington Street, Chicago, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He completed an intensive 8-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. By graduating from basic training, Airman Willis earns four credits toward an associate degree in applied science through the Community College of the Air Force. Airman Willis is a 2008 graduate of Al Raby High School.
