On August 24, the Paul Simon Chicago Job Corps Center, 3348 South Kedzie Avenue, joined 124 Job Corps Centers across the nation in the second National Commencement Day ceremonies, launching thousands of graduates into rewarding vocational careers in hundreds of trades.
For more than 50 years, the U.S. Job Corps has been preparing young people ages 16-24 for successful, high-paying careers in trades.
This program of the U.S. Department of Labor is a partnership with unions and the business community. Industry leaders teach courses and open doors for apprenticeships and job placements.
All instruction provided by the Job Corps is at no cost to students. In addition, all Job Corps participants must earn high school diplomas or GEDs. This, too, is provided at no cost on 125 centers in all 50 states. Students who wish to live on campus stay free of charge in dormitories. Meals are also provided free and students earn a modest stipend while attending class. Following graduation, free job placement assistance is available.
The Paul Simon Chicago Job Corps Center is located on a beautiful campus secluded from the noise and bustle of the city. It offers training to more than 300 men and women at all times studying nine trades: Carpentry, Painting, Bricklaying, Material Handling & Distribution, Certified Nursing Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, Office Administration, Computer Service & Repair, and Graphic Design.
Students are completing course work and starting jobs each week and new students are arriving on campus.
Each Job Corps campus offers its own menu of courses and students are transported to centers across the country offering the training they desire.
